Viraj Desilva: My walk away story...

My walk away story is not as interesting as some of yours but I was inspired by the stories here.

My parents immigrated our family to the United States in 1993 from our tiny country Sri Lanka, looking for better opportunities and education for us. Sri Lanka was in the midst of a bitter civil war at the time.

Like many other immigrant success stories, we thrived in this land of opportunity with hard work and grit and I would consider us living American dream. Politically though we always voted Democrat as we were meant to believe that it’s the party that stands for the immigrants. I got my citizenship in 2006. I voted for Obama twice.

My walk away moment came in 2016 because of Hillary. You see she was a big sympathizer of the LTTE, a terrorist group in Sri Lanka that was wiped out finally in 2009. As a former Sri Lankan I couldn’t get myself to vote for her. So I voted for Trump with great reluctance.

But the last 4 years, I am pleasantly surprised at Trump's achievements as president. Finally we had someone with actions and not just eloquent words. He did it with no support from MSM or the House. I also realized that my values like small government, meritocracy, less taxes and self- accountability align with the conservative values.

The current events like politicizing the pandemic instead of finding solutions, rioting has given us a preview of the current Democratic Party’s agenda. I can no longer associate myself with evil, intolerance and mediocrity. Instead I want to be the best version of myself. This year I will be voting for president Trump not with reluctance but with pride.
