Vice President Pence said Tuesday that he would “not hesitate” to send his own children back to school because he believes the nation can safely reopen its schools and that the health risks to most children “are low.”
At a news conference in Columbia, S.C., Pence — the father of three adult children — said that if his children were younger, he’d want them to be back in classrooms at the end of the summer.
“I’m your VP, but the most important title I’ll ever hold is D-A-D,” Pence said at the conference, which followed a roundtable event with South Carolina students and educators about safe reopening. The state’s governor, Henry McMaster (R), has called for schools to reopen full-time. “I can tell you with my wife seated right here, if our kids were elementary school age or high school age or college, we wouldn’t hesitate to send them back to school.”
